“Toi”

“The Last of the Giants”

After the great flood, Toi was among the few who survived. He was also the last of the great giants, a race that remained reclusive, yet left tell-tale signs of their existence all over the known world in the form of giant megalithic stone sites – whose true secrets remain undiscovered.

Not much is known of Toi, the giant – he certainly traveled the Pacific and is linked with most of the Megalithic sites of Polynesia. He settled in Aotearoa around the time of the arrival of the Taniwha, but was no friend of the creatures they had become – holding them solely responsible for the cause of the great flood that devastated the world.

Neither was he friendly with the Aho – even challenging them on several occasions were they to cross paths – and he refused to side with either Aho or Taniwha in their terrible war.

Like other giants, Toi was long-lived but not immortal. By the end of the First Taniwha War rumours of Toi’s passing had made Māori suspicious of the motives of the Aho – suggesting the last of the giants might have fallen under their blade.

His final resting place has never been uncovered.
