“The Compassion Of The Tuatara Mystic”

​The origins of the mystical mages known as the Tuatara remains shrouded in mystery. As old as time itself, they were present when the Taniwha landed on the shores of Aotearoa, and their numbers were already few, but they are without doubt, one of the ‘elders,’ born to the world alongside the gods and faeries.

​The Tuatara walked in both the living and spiritual worlds – to them, there was no difference – and they used this gift to unify balance in both planes of existence. The Tuatara were shape-shifters and powerful adepts in Forest and Earth magic, whom the Taniwha used for their own advantage – before the Tuatara realised their folly and wrestled back control – and the Aho were their disciples in the war against the Taniwha.

​By this time, there were only a handful left, and the Taniwha hunted what remained, leaving them no choice but to revert to a more primitive state to survive.

​Prophecy speaks of their return as a second grace for the tangata whenua (people of the land).
