“The Children Of Māui”

The Aho, known otherwise as the first children of Māui, were a magical people, blessed with long life and gifted with a deep desire to advance their understanding of the world. They were charged with peace-keeping, spreading the gift of healing and natural magic, and maintaining order over the people whom the gods had fashioned from the earth.

Like the priestly order of Watchers before them, the Aho (or the Enlightened Ones) traveled far and wide, and had a strong affinity for both the physical and spiritual world.

Unlike the Watchers however, the children of Māui did not corrupt themselves in Dark Magic, and eventually were charged by the gods to hunt down these rouge magicians. But this task proved very dangerous, as the Watchers had evolved beyond their frail physical selves and now tapped raw power unlike the world had ever seen, calling themselves Taniwha. These godly perversions were now living weapons of Dark Arts, and the Aho suffered greatly at their hands.

The gods, knowing the impossible task their elite warriors faced, granted the Aho weapons grafted with powerful magic, and gave them dominion over the people they were charged to keep safe.

This mighty struggle, The Taniwha Wars gave rise to a handful of heroes whose names have echoed through the ages – such as Wairua Toa, Rarotake,  Tawhaki and Ra Tere – whose tireless struggle lasted many years. The First War ended when the Taniwha felled the last Aho.

Ra Tere was that last Aho to die in battle in the Far North of Te Ika-A-Māui (the North Island of New Zealand).

Of their weapons and taonga (possesions), only a few have been uncovered or passed down through the generations, though the magic that resides within remains untapped… for the time being.
